American
restaurateurs shamelessly slap the term
"bistro" on everything from awful
chain outlets to places with $55 entrees. The
French reserve the term for modest neighborhood
spots like Petit Robert Bistro that
unpretentiously serve delicious, relatively
simple meals at workingman's prices.
"Little Bob's" hits the bistro
bull's-eye squarely with fine traditional
Parisian fare, brusque but professional service,
and nary an entrée over $20. C'est le luxe sans
le luxe.

Her
eyes shining and hands moving as she describes
her food, Moyoko Yoneda personifies all that
is fresh and exciting at Jacky's Table in
Brighton. At 26 years old, Yoneda is the new
chef de cuisine of a French bistro that is
casual, very reasonably priced, and young at
heart. She is also one of several young women
chefs starting their careers in Boston.
"I'm excited for my bread cake," she
says of her newest creation, a curry-inflected
goat cheese and bread pudding filled with a
mix of vegetables, named for her on the
upcoming spring menu. Every Friday, Yoneda
says, she creates a new fish special - a
recent one was king fish with piri piri sauce
- and every Saturday a new dessert offering.
Yoneda was born in Tokyo and grew up moving
back and forth between Japan and San Antonio,
where her physician father did cancer
research. So she loves the new steak tartar on
the spring menu. "I'm from Texas so
anything steak" is appealing, she says.
Chef Jacky Robert taught her to hand-cut steak
for classically French tartar so that the
texture and taste is just right. And as spring
settles in, Yoneda, who graduated from Boston
University's School of Hospitality
Administration and Le Cordon Bleu, is looking
forward to the terrace opening along
Commonwealth Avenue. "We're going to have
an ice cream bar," she says, "just
like in Paris." |
